Not everyone's built for those crack-of-dawn fishing trips, and that's exactly why Captain Greg designed this perfect mid-day adventure on Lake Michigan. This 5-hour guided charter gives you the chance to sleep in while still landing some serious fish. Sure, the bite might slow down a bit during midday hours, but don't let that fool you – Captain Greg's decades of experience on these waters means he knows exactly where to find the active fish when others are heading back to shore. You'll be targeting some of Lake Michigan's most prized species including Lake Trout, Steelhead, Brown Trout, and both Chinook and Coho Salmon. With room for up to 4 anglers, this top-rated charter offers the perfect balance of relaxed timing and productive fishing.
This isn't your typical rushed half-day trip. Captain Greg and his skilled First Mate (who happens to be his wife Cathy) treat every guest like family, making sure you're comfortable and confident from the moment you step aboard. The boat launches from McKinley Marina in Milwaukee, and within minutes you'll be cruising over Lake Michigan's deep, clear waters where the big fish live. The mid-day timing actually works in your favor for certain species – Lake Trout, for instance, often feed more actively during these hours when the sun penetrates deeper into the water column. You'll have plenty of time to learn proper techniques, enjoy the scenery, and really get into the rhythm of Great Lakes fishing. Don't forget to bring your fishing license, sunscreen (non-spray only), water, snacks, and a cooler for your catch. The crew handles everything else, from setting up your gear to cleaning and packaging your fish at the end of the day.
Lake Michigan fishing is all about trolling, and Captain Greg has this technique down to a science. You'll be running multiple lines at different depths using downriggers, planer boards, and lead core setups to cover the entire water column where fish are feeding. The boat's equipped with top-quality rods, reels, and all the terminal tackle you'll need – everything from flashers and dodgers to the proven spoons and plugs that Lake Michigan salmon and trout can't resist. The First Mate stays busy adjusting depths, changing lures based on what's working, and making sure your lines stay in the water and fish-ready. This is structure fishing at its finest, targeting thermal layers, drop-offs, and current breaks where baitfish congregate and predators follow. You'll learn to read the electronics, understand how water temperature affects fish behavior, and pick up techniques that'll make you a better angler long after this trip ends.
"Great Times!! Excellent adventures!" - Gregory
"Wow! exceptional charter fishing experience. Captain Greg and Cathy are a husband/wife Team. Captain Greg introduced his "first mate" as one of the best in Milwaukee and that, we quickly saw, is the truth. These two went above and beyond in every way with an attitude of EXCELLENCE in every touch. HIGHLY recommend Hold'em Sportfishing out of McKinley Marina, Milwaukee. Mom, Dad, and three sisters went out on this trip for our Father's day wish. Every thing from the safety of the boat, to navigating to determined hunting down the fish, to docking, cleaning & packaging the fish for take home and EVEN photos with several phones. This couple has a passion in what they are doing and provided an experience as though we were their own family. Besides some lake trout, king salmon, and rainbow trout, we have memories that will last a lifetime." - Billie Sue
Rainbow Trout, also known as Steelhead in Lake Michigan, are absolute fighters that'll test your drag system and your arms. These chrome-bright fish typically run 5-12 pounds and are most active during spring and fall months when water temperatures hover in the 50s and 60s. They're notorious for their acrobatic jumps and long runs, making them a customer favorite for good reason. You'll find them feeding on alewives and smelt in 40-80 feet of water, often suspended mid-column where the thermocline creates the perfect hunting zone.
Coho Salmon are the acrobats of Lake Michigan, known for their spectacular aerial displays when hooked. These silver rockets usually weigh 3-8 pounds and are incredibly aggressive feeders during summer and early fall. They school up tight, so when you find one, you'll often find several. Cohos love bright, flashy lures and will often hit with such force that you'll know immediately what you've got on the line. Their firm, flaky meat makes them excellent table fare.
Chinook Salmon are the kings of Lake Michigan for a reason – these bruising fish can exceed 20 pounds and provide some of the most memorable fights you'll ever experience. Peak season runs from late spring through early fall, with the biggest fish often caught in deeper water during the heat of summer. Kings are methodical fighters, using their bulk and power to test every component of your tackle. They're also the most prized for eating, with rich, fatty meat that's perfect for grilling or smoking.
Brown Trout are the smartest fish in the lake, requiring finesse and patience to consistently catch. These golden-sided beauties average 5-15 pounds and are most active during low-light conditions, though Captain Greg knows the specific spots where they feed during midday hours. Browns are incredibly structure-oriented, often relating to subtle bottom changes and temperature breaks that only experienced guides know how to find and fish effectively.
Lake Trout are the deep-water specialists, often found in 60-150 feet of water where they cruise the bottom looking for easy meals. These native fish can live for decades and grow quite large, with 10-20 pounders being common catches. Lakers

Browns are the smartest fish we target, running 8-24 inches and known for being incredibly selective feeders. They love structure - near drop-offs, around piers, and in deeper holes during daylight hours. Fall is magic time when they feed aggressively at night, though we catch them year-round. These fish are prized for their wariness and fighting ability, plus they're excellent eating with firm, flavorful meat. The golden-brown coloring with black spots makes them beautiful fish. They can live up to 20 years, so some of these fish have seen every lure in the book. My best advice: downsize your tackle and use natural presentations. In Lake Michigan, try trolling small spoons in 40-60 feet of water along temperature breaks - browns often suspend there waiting to ambush prey.

King salmon are the giants of our waters, regularly hitting 15-30 pounds in Lake Michigan. These bruisers stay deep, often 60-120 feet down, since they're sensitive to bright light. Early morning and evening produce the best bites, especially during late spring and summer runs. What draws anglers is the sheer power - these fish make long, bulldogging runs that'll test your tackle and patience. The rich, orange-pink meat is restaurant quality. Unlike other salmon, kings prefer to fight deep rather than jump, using their weight and strength to wear you down. Here's what works: use heavy downrigger weights and keep your lures close to bottom structure. When you hook one, don't rush the fight - let the fish tire itself out in the depths.

Silver salmon are the acrobats of Lake Michigan, averaging 8-12 pounds and known for jumping clean out of the water when hooked. They cruise open water, typically 30-80 feet deep, following baitfish schools. Late spring through summer offers the best action when water temps hit their sweet spot. What makes cohos special is their aggressive nature - they'll hit lures hard and fight like they're twice their size. The bright orange-red meat is outstanding on the dinner table too. These fish can leap vertically up to 6 feet, so keep your drag smooth and rod tip up. My go-to trick: when trolling for cohos, vary your speed every few minutes. That speed change often triggers strikes from fish that have been following your lures.

Lakers are the deep-water specialists, living in 80-200+ feet where it stays cold year-round. These char family members grow big - 15-40 pounders aren't uncommon in Lake Michigan. They prefer overcast conditions and low-light periods, making them perfect for our midday trips when they're less spooky. What guests love is the steady, powerful fight and the excellent white meat that flakes perfectly. The grey-green coloring with cream spots is distinctive. Spring right after ice-out offers shallow water opportunities, but summer means going deep with downriggers. Since they're slow-growing fish, catching a big one is special. Here's my secret: jig vertically with large spoons or soft plastics near bottom structure. Lakers often hit on the drop, so watch your line closely.

Steelhead, as we call them in Lake Michigan, run 2-8 pounds on average and put up one heck of a fight with their signature jumps. You'll find them cruising mid-depths, usually 20-60 feet down depending on water temps. They prefer clean, cold water around 55-65°F, which makes spring through early summer prime time. These fish are acrobatic fighters that'll test your drag system, plus they make excellent table fare with that pink flesh. The silver coloring with that classic pink stripe makes them easy to spot in the net. Here's a pro tip: when you feel that first jump, keep steady pressure but don't horse them - let them tire themselves out with those aerial displays and you'll land more fish.
